Advancing Phoenix's Infrastructure:  Transforming the Approval Process and Requirements for Sewer Manhole Coatings

Register today!

Phoenix has more than 112,000 manholes vulnerable to corrosion due to unique wastewater conditions. Traditionally, protective coatings are applied to prevent damage. Two decades ago, Phoenix assessed various coatings, resulting in an approved products list (APL). This ensured that coatings met City's specific needs. With an aging infrastructure and system expansion, there's a demand to expand the APL and certified applicators to handle the growing need. The City revamped the approval process for quicker, thorough assessments, focusing on long-term performance, cost efficiency, and high application quality. The new process evaluates products through four steps: a comparative review, checking previous similar installations, a predictive analysis of coating life, and a pilot installation program. The approval process, once taking up to five years, has been streamlined. Alongside, the City will be implementing a complete update of the City of Phoenix Supplement to MAG 626.This presentation will explore the evolution of APL and provide details of the updated process and requirements, the Predictive Analysis process, and the updates to MAG 626.
