Implementing a New Raw Water Delivery System Deep Beneath Lake Travis, TX for BCRUA

The Brushy Creek Regional Utility Authority (BCRUA) is a partnership of three of the fastest growing cities in Central Texas - Cedar Park, Leander, and Round Rock. The authority was formed in 2006 to develop a regional water system that withdraws, treats, and delivers water from Lake Travis to its member cities. The system is being developed in several phases. Phase 1 has been completed and consists of a temporary floating raw water intake barge, raw and finished water transmission pipelines, and a 32.5 million gallon per day (MGD) water treatment plant (WTP). The current floating intake barge pumps water from the Sandy Creek arm of Lake Travis, which is relatively shallow compared to the main Colorado River channel of the lake. The BCRUA recognizes the need for a deep water intake structure to ensure the capacity and reliability of future water supplies and prolonged droughts over recent decades have confirmed the vulnerability of the floating intake. Phase 2 will expand the system and includes construction of a deep water intake in the main river channel of Lake Travis, suction tunnel, pump station, and discharge tunnel that will connect to the Phase 1 raw water transmission pipeline. The Phase 2 Raw Water Delivery System will have an ultimate capacity of 145 MGD and provide a reliable water source to sustain long term growth of the partner cities.
